WILLIAM CHO

PRESIDENT AND CEO

LG ELECTRONICS USA

Thank you, USGBC New Jersey, for this special recognition. We wouldn’t be here tonight without the strong support from the LG team, elected officials and especially the community. We sincerely appreciate the ongoing collaboration with USGBC and Florence Block, who have supported us since the beginning.

Tonight’s honor is humbling to us and, at the same time, a source of great pride. We are proud of our progress toward excellence in sustainability. And we are very proud of our new headquarters project in Englewood Cliffs.

As you saw on the video, this project will create a world-class, sustainably designed building that will benefit LG and the state of New Jersey, while protecting the iconic vistas and integrity of the national treasure known as The Palisades.

In June, after 11 months of constructive discussions, LG and leading conservation groups reached a win-win agreement – meeting in the middle on the height of the building. This landmark settlement paves the way for construction to begin next year!

Last week’s appeals court ruling, referring the matter of the building’s height, back to Englewood Cliffs, is another step forward. Our plan all along has been to work closely with the town on our amended application. And, our win-win settlement means that the potential visual impact of the building now is really a non-issue.

It is important to note that our new building will allow LG to double local employment to more than 1,000 by 2019, while creating thousands of much-needed New Jersey construction jobs.

And, I am proud that LG is giving back to the community. The new building will house the LG Science and Environmental Learning Center for local school children to learn about green building and saving the planet.

I want to thank our friends from the NRDC, the New Jersey Conservation Foundation and the NY-NJ Trail Conference – and special guest Larry Rockefeller – for being here tonight to share in this honor. Together with Scenic Hudson and the New Jersey Women’s Clubs, they worked tirelessly with LG to find a workable solution for all concerned.

This award recognizes the shared mission of USGBC and LG to “Build a Greener New Jersey.”

Beyond our own LEED building project, we are supporting green building projects in New Jersey with industry-leading LG innovations, including super-efficient commercial air conditioning systems, advanced solar and LED lighting solutions, and Energy Star certified appliances and consumer electronics.

On behalf of all of us at LG Electronics, I wish to thank USGBC New Jersey again for this great honor.
